Dune Buggies

11/26/2015 Add Comment

The other dune buggy type vehicle from Hot Wheels.

I am using these as a radio version and other van body uses.

I may put a couple red crosses on it perhaps.

The rear has two plastic spare tires, but they could be easily cut away.

The two vehicles together look pretty good, I think.

T10 heavy tank company, long range heavy firepower.

120mm Mortar platoon on wheeled APCs.

More supply and engineering trucks, modern armies need lots of engineering assistance.

Recon vehicles provide eyes and ears for the division commander.

More supply trucks.  The Fulda Gap is a long way from Moscow.

More vehicles, buildings, equipment in storage.

Bridge Launcher

M47 AVLB.  The hull is from a Japanese company called some thing like Kawai.  They made the worst 1/87th scale vehicles ever.  I ordered one of each direct from Japan, many years ago.  Excellent quality molds, no flash, every model totally useless.  They made about a dozen.  The only thing I kept was the hull from the M47.  I used it for this model.

I took the bridge, launcher, machine guns, bridge rest, and tracks from the Roco M48 AVLB.  My assumption is that an M47 AVLB would have essentially the same launcher, just as the M48 and M60 series have similar launchers.

With the use of a little sheet styrene I was able to make the AVLB fully functional, just like the Roco.

Bridge is employed and the launcher backs away.

It was a time consuming conversion and it required an M48 AVLB to make it happen, so I only made one of them.

The AVLB drives over the bridge, turns around and picks up the bridge to head for the next obstacle.  It gives my Pentomic Army unprecedented mobility.

Tank Battalion

Trailers add important capacity for cargoes.  This photos also shows the mess trailer.

I have an M47 without a barrel.  It got broken and I got it in a used collection.  I save it for a potential project.  It may become a howitzer version, ARV or maybe even get a main gun upgrade.

Typically several trucks in the battalion will have a ring mounted .50 caliber machine gun for anti-aircraft defense.  Vans are used for small item repair or in this case, fire direction for the artillery.

The M59 is by Roskopf, I added a few extra tools for more detail.

A tank battalion with attached artillery is a lot of vehicles.

This is an M47 US Army tank battalion.  Three platoons of 5 tanks each, per company, three companies, a total of 54 tanks when you include the 2 HQ tanks per company and the 3 HQ tanks in the battalion HQ.

This trailer, a water buffalo, is used to provide fresh water to the troops.

Tanks have a .50 caliber machine gun for the commanders station.  These are the battalion HQ tanks.

Tanks break down, or throws a track or needs an engine, cannon or turret replaced, the cranes on these vehicles can be a life saver.

I make up loads of materials to be carried in the truck beds.  Modern armies use lots of supplies.

M47 Battalion

The M47 tank battalion has an armored recovery vehicle and a recovery truck too.

The M59 is and APC the US Army used before the M113.

While the M47 did not have an AVLB version, I created one from a damaged M48 version.  It seemed a reasonable vehicle if the M47 had remained in service.

This is the same tank used as the German tanks in the movie Battle of the Bulge.

I always liked this tank, and so I was anxious to collect a battalion of them.  Most are Roco, some are from AHM.

Roco Minitanks for the Pentomic Era.

An M47 Patton medium tank battalion.

Three companies of three platoons each.

Attached artillery.

Headquarters tanks.  The M47 was only used for a short time before it was taken out of service and replaced by the M48 series of tanks.  In my world they stayed in service with the US Army a bit longer...
