Tank Battalion

11/04/2015

A possible organization for a late war German heavy tank battalion.

A heavy tank battalion is usually four tanks per platoon, and three platoons per company.  Two HQ tanks for a total of 14 in a company.

Three companies of 14 tanks each gives you 42 tanks, with a battalion HQ of three tanks, for a total of 45 tanks in a battalion.

This was the norm for Tiger I, Tiger II, and JagdTiger battalions, mid to late war.

Tiger I and Tiger II were considered interchangeable and so  mixed units were common as older tanks were replaced with new tanks.

Very late in the war, medium tanks were sometimes included as they were so short of heavy tanks.
